Meta, the tech giant behind major social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, is preparing to take a big step forward with artificial intelligence (AI). According to a report from the Financial Times, Meta plans to launch millions of generative AI characters, appearing on their platforms as real users.

Connor Hayes, Meta’s Vice President of product for generative AI, shared: “We expect that these AIs will exist on our platforms in a way similar to how user accounts exist today. They’ll have profiles, profile pictures, and be able to create and share AI-assisted content on the platform. This is the direction we’re heading in,” he told the Financial Times.

While bots are often seen as a negative aspect of social media use, Meta has decided to proactively introduce these non-human users to attract a younger generation. CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared last August that, “everything we do will be changed in some way by AI.” He gave the example that traditional friend content feeds will gradually be replaced by content from creators and, in the future, much of this content will be generated by AI.

Recently, Meta acquired Social.ai – an app where users interact with millions of AI bots, along with its founder Michael Sayman. This acquisition seems to have influenced Meta’s decision to develop new generative AI features.

However, the introduction of millions of AI bots to social media also raises many questions. In the past, bots have caused quite a few problems on social media platforms such as scamming users, spreading unwanted content, and distorting the results of advertising campaigns. Despite this, these AI-generated accounts could potentially drive significant interaction on the platform.

User reaction to the emergence of millions of AI bots remains unknown. However, regardless of public reception, Meta is gradually changing how we view social media, shifting from building communities of friends to automating socialization.

In May 2024, OpenAI announced the development of the Media Manager tool, allowing creators to control whether their work is used in AI data. However, after 7 months, this tool has yet to appear, despite the company’s commitment to complete it before 2025.

Media Manager is expected to help identify copyrighted content such as text, images, and videos, reducing disputes and avoiding lawsuits. But according to TechCrunch, this project is not a priority at OpenAI, and the company hasn’t provided any updates since August 2024.

OpenAI is currently facing multiple lawsuits from artists and authors, alleging intellectual property infringement. Although some temporary solutions, such as data removal forms, have been implemented, these measures are considered ineffective.

Experts doubt the feasibility of Media Manager, arguing that this tool could shift the responsibility of copyright protection from OpenAI to creators. OpenAI continues to defend its practices with the “fair use” rationale and asserts that copyrighted data is necessary to build competitive AI.
